Public Relations Practitioners’ Perception of the World Wide Web as a communications Tool

This journal discusses about how public relations practitioners perceive websites as a communications tool and how the World Wide Web fits into their overall communications strategy. Practitioners believe a Web site symbolizes an organization’s competitiveness in order to enhance an organization’s image, and increases the practitioner’s personal sense of professionalism. The World Wide Web is becoming a significant communications tool for businesses and organizations. Websites are used to keep stakeholders up-to-date, provide information to the media, gather information about publics, strengthen corporate identity and a host of other public relations functions.

The web is the first proscribed public relations mass medium in that matter gets through to a mass audience, but it’s not filtered through gatekeepers. Traditionally in public relations, proscribed message are sent through newsletters, annual reports, and other vehicles written by communication professionals in organization. Nowadays the information provided on how to use the Internet, the World Wide Web, and other online technologies to improve the execution of their jobs. A website was not viewed as a replacement for face-to-face contact but it was perceived as a way to strengthen relationships that already existed, mainly because of the e-mail function. A website is becoming a widely adopted public relations tool. It is used to provide information to both external and internal publics. The e-mail function is seen as offering two-way communication opportunities.

The practitioner needs to be prepared to make the site a priority if it’s stay up-to-date and present a positive image of the organization. For the site to become a priority there must be a commitment to provide the personnel, training, and equipment needed to keep pace with the additional work. Furthermore if it’s managed to be a useful tool, standards for evaluating its effectiveness in that context must to be established. Public relations practitioners perceive a website as a tool to enhance an organization’s image.

Myspace, Facebook, and The Strength of Internet Ties

Myspace, Facebook, and The Strength of Internet Ties:

Online Social Networking and Bridging Social Capital

By: Angela M. Adkins (May, 2009)

2009

This study examines the user and usage characteristics of two popular social networking websites, Myspace and Facebook, and then investigates the relationship between online social networking and bridging social capital. Myspace users tend to have less education and be more racially diverse, have lower incomes, and focus more on forming new social ties online. Conversely, Facebook users tend to be better educated, have higher income, and focus more on maintaining relationships with their existing offline ties. A positive association exists between the degree of online social networking and bridging capital, although there was no meaningful difference in bridging capital between those who used Myspace only and those who used Facebook only.

However, the results indicate that the use of Myspace in conjunction with Facebook significantly increases bridging capital and moderates the effect of race, income, and degree of usage. Hence, online social networking is a useful tool for enlarging and maintaining a diverse social network, but that the examination of online social networking in the aggregate may hide distinctions among sites. Different sites are used in different ways, and thus using more than one site might provide the greatest benefit in terms of increased bridging capital. Using both Myspace and Facebook together, as opposed to using only one site, magnifies the positive effect of race and social networking intensity on bridging capital. Conversely, using both of the sites reverses the positive effect of income on bridging capital.

Most people used these social networking sites to blend their online and offline worlds, maintaining connections with friends and family and spending time in person with many of their online contacts. However, there are some distinct differences in typical usage by site. Facebook users tend to focus more on managing existing offline ties, while Myspace users may focus more on creating new ties with people they meet online. By contrast, users who more frequently create new weak ties online may have connections with a more diverse network of people and ultimately reap more in terms of bridging capital. Among those who do engage in social networking, then, using more than one site may be one way to narrow the gap in bridging social capital due to other factors.

The Magic Communication Machine Examining the Internet's Impact on Public Relations, Journalism, and the Public

Source : http://www.instituteforpr.org/research_single/magic_communication_machine/

This journal discussed how the use of Internet impacts the public relations practice and its relationship. The Internet has rapidly developed into an important medium for the distribution of public relations messages. New technologies have dramatically changed the way public relations works by providing new and more efficient ways in which communication messages can be produced, distributed, displayed, and stored.

With the existence of Internet, it enables public relations practitioner to work more effectively and efficiently. Yet, they are able to send message, news release within minutes in just one click. Besides that it also helps to improve the relationship between the PR practitioners and the media friends, especially those journalist. With the existence of many social networking sites, it enables two-way communication between them at all time, so they not only communicate for the work purposes, but also to strengthen their relationship.

However the issues of credibility arise, since people are less likely to pay attention to media they do not perceive as credible. Studies on the credibility of newspapers, magazines, radio, and television continually report if people do not believe what they read, see, and hear, they are less likely to pay attention to it. However even though Internet and web-based information is potentially inaccurate and biased, the findings show that people increasingly rely upon it as an information medium since it only requires just one click to obtain required information. Besides that it also enables to view various opinion from different people.

Therefore this journal has proven that Internet has given a big impact to the PR industry, especially in helping the PR practitioners to do their jobs, yet it enhance the communication flow between the PR practitioners and their stakeholders. However with the existence of Internet it allows rumors to be spread easily, therefore PR practitioners need to be able to fully utilize the Internet in both situation.
